The NBCC-NCMHCE national clinical mental health counseling examination assesses a person’s capacity for applying and analyzing the knowledge required to function as a minimum competent professional counselor. It does this by evaluating a professional mental health counselor’s capacity to respond to clinical case simulations while using knowledge of theoretical and skill-based principles. The case simulations aim to assess a candidate’s capacity for recognizing, assessing, diagnosing, and formulating plans for treating clinical issues. As the leading certification body for the counseling profession, the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) has new responsibilities to develop the counseling profession and improve mental and behavioral health everywhere.

The NCMHCE has updated the new exam format. The new NBCC-NCMHCE exam paper is longer. Thirteen multiple-choice questions follow a client narrative (which includes the diagnosis) in 11 case studies. Each question contains four possible answers, but only one is accurate. The number of correct answers you choose will determine your final score. The exam consists of 143 questions in total. However, only 100 are graded. The remaining 43 questions are used for “field testing.” Answer every question, even if you have to guess because you will not be penalized for giving the incorrect answer. The NCMHCE typically takes three hours to complete. All candidates will have an additional five minutes to peruse and agree to the nondisclosure agreement (NDA) before having 10 minutes to finish the tutorial.
Following the scheduling of your exam, Pearson VUE will send you a confirmation email with information about the test day, time, test center’s address and phone number, and driving instructions. If you cannot take your planned exam, you must notify Pearson VUE at least 24 hours before the scheduled testing session. You may reschedule your appointment at the time of cancellation or at a later time for a cost of $50. You must pass to retake the test at least three months after the original date. Furthermore, our course will help you to pass this exam on the first attempt.
